How taxi profit is calculated
Revenue = trips per day × average fare × working days. Driver pay is a share of revenue (commission) or hours × wage. Running costs are fuel (miles × cost per mile × days) plus fixed monthly costs: insurance, maintenance, lease, licences, dispatch and other. Profit is revenue minus driver pay and running costs.
What is a good taxi profit margin?
Margins vary widely by city, pay model and fleet age. Operators who pay commission often keep 10–25% of fares after all costs; owner-driver and car rental models work differently, with the operator earning rental and dispatch fees. The most useful comparison is your own margin over time.
The fastest ways to improve profit
For most fleets, more trips per car matters more than anything else, because fixed costs like insurance and lease stay the same. That's why missed calls hurt so much: every unanswered call is a trip a car could have done. Other levers are reducing empty miles, keeping cars on the road with good maintenance, and reviewing insurance every year.
Break-even trips
The break-even figure tells you how many trips each car needs per day just to cover its costs. Every trip above that number is profit. If your cars are close to break-even, small changes in demand have a big effect, and covering nights and weekends can make the difference.
Taxi Profit Calculator: questions and answers
Is this taxi profit calculator accurate?
It's as accurate as the numbers you enter. Use real averages from your last few months for the best result.
Should I include my own salary?
If you work in the business, add a fair wage for yourself under other costs to see the true business profit.
How do I find my fuel cost per mile?
Divide your monthly fuel spend by the miles driven in that month. For electric cars, use your charging cost per mile.
What if drivers rent cars from me?
Choose “Owner-driver / drivers rent the car” and enter the weekly rent you receive as revenue instead (trips × fare can be adjusted to match).
Why is break-even shown as trips per day?
It's the easiest number to check against your dispatch records each day.
Does it work for limo companies?
Yes. Use your average booking value as the fare and your typical number of jobs per day.
